What Is a Side Sewer?

A side sewer, or lateral sewer line, is the underground pipe running from your building’s plumbing out to the city sewer main or your septic tank. It’s easy to forget it’s there until something goes wrong — a root intrusion, a collapsed section, or an aging clay pipe can all lead to slow drains, backups, or sewage surfacing in your yard. Because most of this line is buried and out of sight, regular inspection is the best way to catch problems early.

When buying or selling a home, there will often be a sewer scope inspection done for the buyer’s peace of mind. If any issues arise, that is where AA Quality Septic comes in.

Lateral Sewer Inspection

A lateral sewer inspection — often called a sewer scope — uses camera equipment to look inside the line without digging, identifying cracks, root intrusion, bellies (sagging sections that trap waste), and offset joints.

We recommend a sewer scope inspection before buying or selling a property, before a major landscaping or construction project, or any time you’re dealing with recurring drain backups. You’ll get a clear picture of your line’s condition and a straightforward recommendation — whether that’s routine maintenance, a targeted repair, or a full replacement.

Lateral Sewer Repair

Not every problem with a side sewer line means starting over. When a lateral sewer repair is enough to fix the issue — a localized crack, a root intrusion, or a damaged section — we can address it directly, minimizing the digging and disruption to your yard or driveway. Our team diagnoses the exact location and cause of the problem before recommending a repair, so you’re not paying for more work than the job needs.

Lateral Sewer Replacement

When a side sewer line is too old, too damaged, or failing in multiple places, a full lateral sewer replacement is the more reliable long-term fix. We install new, code-compliant sewer line sized and routed for your property, coordinating with Whatcom County permitting requirements along the way. A properly installed replacement line protects your property from future backups and costly repeat repairs.

Lateral Sewer Cleanout

A lateral sewer cleanout gives direct access to your sewer line for maintenance and emergency service, without needing to dig up your yard every time. If your property doesn’t already have one, we can install a cleanout access point. If you have one that’s damaged, buried, or hard to locate, we can repair or relocate it so it’s actually usable when you need it.

Lateral Sewer Connection

Building new or reconfiguring your property’s plumbing? A lateral sewer connection ties your building’s plumbing system into the city sewer main or your septic system. We handle new lateral sewer connections for new construction, additions, and properties switching between septic and city sewer service, working within local code requirements from start to finish. If you’re building new, check out our septic installation services page for the full process.
